Open Burning Permit

OPEN BURNING APPLICATION INFORMATION

  1. Applications for Open Burning may be obtained from the website or at the East Haddam Selectman’s Office, located at the Municipal Office Complex, 1 Plains Road, Moodus, CT, Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Applications will be reviewed and site inspections conducted prior to being issued. (Allow at least one business week for the review.)

  2. Open burning shall be permitted between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday by permit only.
     
  3. Open burning shall be conducted only when the fire danger is low or medium, the wind speed is 5 – 15 mph, and the day is sunny or partly sunny.
     
  4. Permit is not valid until notification is made to Valley Shore Dispatch via telephone (860) 399-7921, prior to the starting of and at the completion of the open burning. The Dispatch Center (VS) will know the Forest Fire Danger Index and shall revoke the permit for that day if the index is high or extreme.  The Dispatch Center will require (1) your name, (2) the address of the burn and (3) a telephone numer to reach the person conducting the burn.
     
  5. Open burning shall be supervised at all times and a copy of the Burning Permit shall be kept at the burn site, and readily available to the authority having jurisdiction. If for some reason the Fire Department is called and the Burning Permit is not at the site, or no one is supervising the fire, the fire will be extinguished and no other permits will be granted for that site or applicant.
     
  6. Fire control equipment (i.e. brooms, rakes, garden hose, water pump tanks, etc.) shall be kept at the burn site until the fire has been completely extinguished. The burn site will be completely wet down to ensure that there will be no rekindle of the fire.
     
  7. The burning of garbage or trash, plastics, rubber painted or chemically treated material and construction/demolition material shall be prohibited.
     
  8. The Open Burning Official or the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) may revoke any Open Burning Permit if it is determined that there is a violation of the above requirements, state regulations, or that there is any hazard which will cause air pollution, health hazards or fire danger.
     
  9. Fire Department supervised burns shall be approved by the Fire Chief and a liability waiver shall be signed by the applicant prior to a permit being issued.
